More convincingly than ever before, and using her as a medium, Ingmar Bergman has managed to construe the incurable loneliness of the soul. Between two screenings I struggled to think of an earlier film by Bergman or anyone else which in the same naked way feels like a punch in the soul but in vain.Ībove all, this is Ingrid Bergman's film. Let me begin by saying that I find the power of Autumn Sonata to affect both enormous and unique. We are to be forced into it, to feel how the mirrors close in on us. We are no longer intended to experience it at a distance. His new film Autumn Sonata comes close to this approach, but something new has happened to the play in the confined space. As well as Ingrid Bergman in her best (ever) film role, of course.įor a long period of his life as a mature artist, Ingmar Bergman has been heading towards the enclosed world of the chamber play, in which a few people meet and talk with, or past, each other, and where the space of the drama opens solely onto the landscape of dreams, or of the soul. But this is Bergman's version, and it has its harrowing moments and memorable instants which can recommend it to all Bergman admirers. I can well imagine a more rounded view of the perils of being a mother and child. I myself am more cold-hearted and suspect that it might exacerbate the feelings of guilt already held by working mothers. The way he deals with the role of the mother is reported to have disturbed a number of those who have already seen the film. Once she told me: 'If you don't tell me how I should do this scene, I'll slap you!' I rather liked that."Īutumn Sonata is a film I can appreciate, but to a certain extent (only) on Bergman's terms. In her case I was forced to use tactics that I normally rejected, the first and foremost being aggression. I discovered early into our rehearsals that to be understanding and offer a sympathetic ear did not work. I belive that with her he never hesitated to be disrespectful and arrogant, which evidently was precisely the best method to make her listen. In Hitchcock's films, for instance, she is always magnificent. After all, she had done excellent work in several American films. In spite of her mechanisms for receiving director's cues not being placed where one expected to find them – and where they ought to be – she still must have been somehow receptive to suggestions from two or three of the former directors. I believe that she possessed some sort of inspired system of working, albeit a strange one. It was clear that she had a different approach to her profession than the rest of us. Starting on the first day when we all read the script together in the rehearsel studio, I discovered that she had rehearsed her entire part in front of the mirror, complete with intonations and self-conscious gestures. rather, it was a kind of lenguage barrier, but in a profound sense. I did not have what one would call difficulties in my working relationship with Ingrid Bergman. The crew members were friendly but a little amateurish. Everything we needed was available there, even though the place was dilapidated and had not been kept up. Of course, when the wind blew in certain directions, the air traffic passed right overhead, but otherwise it was old-fashioned and cozy. Built in 1913 or 1914, the buildings have been left just as they were. As it turned out, I felt perfectly content to work in the primitive studios on the outskirts of Oslo. That is the reason I made the strange arrangement to shoot Autumn Sonata in Norway. My decision was final: I would never work again in Sweden. I wrote the screenplay for Autumn Sonata in a few weeks in order to have something up my sleeve in case The Serpent's Egg flopped with a somersault. Once long ago planned to adapt Hjalmar Bergman's novel The Boss, Mrs. She had snuck a letter into my pocket, in which she reminded me of my promise that we would make a film together. The last time I had seen her was at the Cannes Film Festival at the screaning of Cries and Whispers. The idea of working with Ingrid Bergman was an old desire, but that did not initiate the story. The principles are used to make anechoic rooms, noise barriers, and concert halls. Porous materials may absorb sonic energy, while rough materials (with respect to wavelength) may scatter sound in multiple directions. The nature of the material matters as well as its dimensions. If a longitudinal sound wave strikes a flat surface, the reflected sound is coherent if the size of the reflecting surface is large compared to the wavelength of the sound. Reflection is somewhat different from sound. The reflection of sound waves is a fundamental principle in acoustics. Gamma rays and x-rays may be reflected, too, although the nature of the "mirror" is different than for visible light. VHF reflection is used for radio transmission. Light reflection doesn't only happen within the visible spectrum but throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. Reflections occur in several types of waves. Conjugate reflectors may be used to remove aberrations by reflecting a beam and passing the reflection back through the aberrating optics. The tapetum lucidum in some animal eyes acts as a retroreflector (e.g., in cats), improving their night vision.Ĭomplex Conjugate Reflection or Phase ConjugationĬomplex conjugate reflection occurs when light reflects back exactly in the direction from whence it came (as in retroreflection), but both the wavefront and the direction are reversed. The third mirror makes in an inverse of the image from the second mirror, returning it to its original configuration. The second mirror produces an image that is the inverse of the first. A simple way to make a retroreflector is to form a corner reflector, with three mirrors faced mutually perpendicular to each other. In retroreflection, light returns in the direction from whence it came. In reality, images aren't truly infinite because tiny imperfections in the mirror surface eventually propagate and extinguish the image. If a square is formed with four mirrors face to face, the infinite images appear to be arranged within a plane. If two mirrors are placed facing each other and parallel to each other, infinite images are formed along the straight line. In diffuse reflection, light is scattered in multiple directions because of tiny irregularities in the surface of the medium. Waves can also strike non-shiny surfaces, which produce diffuse reflections. Specular reflection from curved surfaces may be magnified or demagnified, depending on whether the surface is spherical or parabolic. Specular reflection from a flat surface forms mirror mages, which appear to be reversed from left to right. An extension of TIRM is total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM), which is an essential tool of biophysics and quantitative biology. The law of reflection works for specular surfaces, which means surfaces which are shiny or mirror-like. This phenomenon is known as frustrated total internal reflection. When light hits the sphere, some of the evanescent waves are scattered by the sphere. The intensity of the scattered light is used to determine this distance. Evanescent waves are used to illuminate the sphere that has a refractive index different from the plate.

It has maps at a large zoom so the maps can be reviewed easily. Types of atlases Ī travel atlas is made for easy use during travel, and often has spiral bindings, so it may be folded flat (for example, Geographers' A–Z Map Company's A–Z atlases). States began producing national atlases in the 19th century. Thus, early printed atlases with the same title page can be different in contents. The client could select the contents to their liking, and have the maps coloured/gilded or not. Unlike today, most atlases were not bound and ready for the customer to buy, but their possible components were shelved separately. Ītlases published nowadays are quite different from those published in the 16th–19th centuries. Rather, that title is awarded to the collection of maps Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by the Brabantian cartographer Abraham Ortelius printed in 1570. The first work that contained systematically arranged maps of uniform size representing the first modern atlas was prepared by Italian cartographer Pietro Coppo in the early 16th century however, it was not published at that time, so it is conventionally not considered the first atlas. Imperii Orientalis et Circumjacentium Regionum by Guillaume Delisle (1742) The neologism coined by Mercator was a mark of his respect for the Titan Atlas, the "King of Mauretania", whom he considered to be the first great geographer. The volume that was published posthumously one year after his death is a wide-ranging text but, as the editions evolved, it became simply a collection of maps and it is in that sense that the word was used from the middle of the 17th century. This title provides Mercator's definition of the word as a description of the creation and form of the whole universe, not simply as a collection of maps. The use of the word "atlas" in a geographical context dates from 1595 when the German-Flemish geographer Gerardus Mercator published Atlas Sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et Fabricati Figura ("Atlas or cosmographical meditations upon the creation of the universe and the universe as created"). They also have information about the map and places in it. In addition to presenting geographic features and political boundaries, many atlases often feature geopolitical, social, religious and economic statistics. Understand that there are several reasons why you might not find oil on the dipstick, and not all of them are that bad after all. In the meantime, let’s take a closer look at the no-oil-on-the-dipstick situation. That is why it is recommended that you do an oil change regularly. Engine oil is designed to form a film that prevents friction between the moving parts and keeps the engine running smoothly. Car engines simply can’t work well without engine oil because that’s what keeps the engine running smoothly. Engine oil is to the car, while blood is to the human body. In such an event, no oil on dipstick engine damage is a possible outcome. But what happens when there is no oil on dipstick? Since engine oil settles to the bottom of the engine, a functional dipstick lets you know the amount of oil you have in your engine. if I am wrong - I apologize.A dipstick is something like a stick(not wooden, of course)that fits just right in the engine and is long enough to get close to the engine’s bottom. VTCS (Variable Tumble Control System) – A set of butterfly plates in the intake manifold that would close to promote low emissions combustion under cold start at low engine speeds. VICS (Variable Inertial Charge System) – A system that can vary the fuel and air mixture and volume of the intake manifold resulting in a broader power band. The updated FS-DE engine enjoyed a few minor technical updates, such as: Only a couple of significant design changes were made to said engine. Since 1993 the FS motor has been installed in five different Mazda applications and one Ford application. Mazda produced four cylinder head designs within the F family, a diesel SOHC 8-valve, the gas SOHC 8-valve, gas SOHC 12-valve, and the gasoline DOHC 16-valve. The first F engine of this family by Mazda was introduced in 1983 as a 1.6L F6. It has a cast iron engine block and an aluminum alloy cylinder head. "The FS is a 2.0L straight-4 cylinder foreign engine manufactured by Mazda. I'm also going to change valve seals within the next month and probably valve cover gasket as well. Just need to know when panic mode should kick in is all. On to the question then! What is the actual SAFE minimum for the oil to be at? Is it just because it's a smaller engine it looks worse than it is? I would prefer to not blow things thing up as it's my baby. I've read the head likes to pool oil but didn't know that much! Now today I get ready to head to the store to go ahead and get the oil and change it today, check the oil, and it's back to just at/over half. Checked it 2 days before and it was a bit over half (oil change due end of this week anyways) so I didn't worry about it then. I had her shut it off, checked the oil and it was 3/4 below the minimum line and bottom of the dipstick. So that will come soon!Īnyways, yesterday my wife cranked up the car to head out and I saw some blue smoke. Wolfe expressed bafflement that such “big realistic novels” were not being written in America,3 and he called for a “battalion, a brigade of Zolas”4 to write them. The Wolfe of Washington? Two years after completing The Bonfire of the Vanities,1 a scathing, screamingly funny account of life in New York City as seen through the intersecting stories of characters from Wall Street and the South Bronx, Tom Wolfe published a literary manifesto called “Stalking the Billion-Footed Beast” in Harper’s Magazine.2 In this essay, Wolfe bemoaned the disappearance of the “realistic novel,” a novel that was of a city-that used the format of fiction, but did so to tell the larger truth of life in the city, as Balzac or Zola had used the novel to depict Paris, or as Dickens or Thackeray had portrayed London. Phasmophobia is not a horror game that thrives on jump scares, but the inclusion of sudden ghost events is the payoff for all the atmospheric buildup. All of this contributes to the likelihood a ghost will interact or provide evidence for Phasmophobia players to find, adding to both the atmosphere and jump-scare fear factors of the game. To go along with this, a handful of ghosts got their sanity drain increased, and the Demon will have an increased chance of triggering its hunting ability. All ghosts now have a more substantial throw power, increased range and height, and increased chances of objects being thrown during hunts. The changes to the ghosts overall have been minimal, but ultimately serve to increase the likelihood of interactions and moments of fright. Related: Phasmophobia Hides Slender Man In New Campsite Map Every room is a threat to the player, and each wing comes with its horrific ambiance to instill fear even before the ghost is found. At the same time, the wings will vary from the disheveled Hospital where screams ring out to the overturned common rooms where spirits hide. Players, in groups or using Phasmophobia's offline single-player feature, will always be met with a bloodied and messy church room as they enter the building. Both versions of Sunny Meadow are a significant upgrade over the comparatively bland Asylum and provide atmospheric terror around every corner. Each wing is still large enough to pose a frightening challenge while not putting players through the troubles of the entire map. However, Sunny Meadows also has a restricted map version, in which players will get one of five wings to explore. This map is a daunting maze of 69 rooms that will make expert ghost hunters work to find their target. The other significant change of the Apocalypse update is the reworked Asylum map Sunny Meadows Mental Institute. These options will let scare-focused players create far more tension in their games overall, radically changing the feel of the game on the player side. All of Phasmophobia's Cursed Possessions are also an editable feature, allowing players to decide how many and which will appear. Aspects of the hunt can be changed as well, including every from how long players have to set up to what the weather will be like, or even completely turning off the Sanity and Activity meters in the van. Along with that comes the ability to alter player speed, sprint duration, sprint recharge, and even toggle off sprinting altogether. Custom Difficulty allows players to alter all aspects of the game, starting with themselves: how much sanity they begin with, how fast it drains, and how many pills they have to restore it can all be changed. Another boon of Custom mode is that it comes with a reward multiplier meaning players can still earn XP and money from playing. Overall, Phasmophobia's Apocalypse update has significant overhauls and additions as it looks to polish the game (and up its fear factor).Īrguably the most significant addition in Phasmophobia's Apocalypse update is the new Custom Difficulty, which allows players to create hunts that are as easy or challenging as they want, perfect for players looking to add difficulty to their games or those who would like things to be more manageable. Other notable changes in this update include a rework of how ghosts interact with their environment, a completely remodeled lobby, and new ways to make money while gathering evidence of ghosts. The two new additions come in the new Custom Difficulty options, where players will get to create everything about how their ghost hunt will work, and the new Sunny Meadows Mental Institution map. The Apocalypse update has two new features for Phasmophobia fans, along with plenty of quality of life and mechanic changes to smooth out gameplay. Cuts like the bluesy, handclap-heavy "Warpath" and the similarly fiery "Time Machine," with its '90s-esque sax samples, are more emblematic of the album's ambitious, empowered tone. While there are a few of Michaelson's trademark intimate breakup songs here, including the tear-inducing "Open Hands," overall the album reveals Michaelson to be in a bright, upbeat state of mind. Michaelson even reunites with longtime collaborator Dan Romer for the epic ballad "Over You," featuring A Great Big World. This time out, Michaelson has enlisted a handful of producers who include, among others, her bandmate bassist Chris Kuffner, Jacquire King ( Modest Mouse, Norah Jones), and singer/songwriter Katie Herzig. Michaelson even seems to reference that album with her Lights Out lead single, the infectious "Girls Chase Boys." However, where Girls and Boys centered around Michaelson's intimate ukulele and acoustic guitar-driven dorm room pop, Lights Out features a broadened sonic palette and a much more robust vocal performance it's a transformation she's been perfecting since 2009's Everybody and 2012's Human Again. In it, Michaelson ruminates on the small details of her everyday life, singing "We make bread on Sundays and the little ones are climbing the walls/Up the walls/Nothing lasts forever but the sound of love astounds me every time that it calls." Ultimately, on Lights Out, Michaelson has captured that sound of love.Ingrid Michaelson's sixth studio album, 2014's Lights Out, is a polished, well-produced effort that magnifies all of the sounds and lyrical themes she's been working with since breaking through with 2007's Girls and Boys. Elsewhere, we get the catchy dance-pop duet "One Night Town" with Mat Kearney and the uplifting anthem "Afterlife." There's also a very in-the-moment feeling of both poignancy and happiness to Lights Out, which is perhaps best expressed in the midtempo Beatlesque ballad "Wonderful Unknown," featuring Michaelson's husband, singer/songwriter Greg Laswell.
